The Herbal Garden and the Philosophical Garden at the Erasmus House

Erasmus came to Anderlecht in 1521 to study a New Testament manuscript. Centuries later in 1987, famous landscape designer René Pechère would compose a garden in the enclosure of the house to memorialize the humanist's time in Brussels, a garden in the spirit of the Renaissance. The Jardin des Maladies contains many medicinal and aromatic plants. Landscape designer Benoît Fondu designed the Jardin Philosophique in 2000, whose leaf-shaped flower beds are a botanical illustration of the landscapes Erasmus crossed during his travels.
